Water is water, right? Not really. It’s no secret that water is essential to life. Unfortunately, in today’s world it's often not enough to simply turn on your tap and drink the requisite eight glasses per day. While the benefits of alkaline water still requires more research, naturally alkaline water offers unique bioavailable minerals that have scientifically proven health benefits.

Alkaline water has gained popularity over the last few years, with athletes and health enthusiasts standing strongly by it. Your own body's pH level plays a huge role in your overall health, especially in a world where processed foods, refined sugars, and pesticides occur in our diets. Unfortunately, these unnatural foods can cause acidosis, or an overproduction of acid in the blood1, where disease can thrive. This manifests in a myriad of symptoms and longterm health issues.
While it's not proven that you can change your body's internal pH with alkaline foods or water (in fact, your body goes to extreme lengths to regulate its pH balance), and more scientific research is undoubtedly needed, there are other science-backed benefits of naturally alkaline water we'll focus on today. Naturally alkaline water has a host of health benefits thanks to the bioavailable minerals found in natural waters.2
What is Alkaline Water?
Alkaline water is a type of water with a high pH. A water's pH measures its level of acidity; a low pH indicates higher acidity, while a higher pH (above 7) indicates alkalinity. Too many hydrogen ions result in less oxygen, which in turn can translate into a higher acidic state. On the other hand, less hydrogen ions result in more oxygen ions, leading to a more alkaline state.
While tap water has a pH of 7 or below generally speaking, Waiakea has a pH of 7.6-8.2, making it an alkaline water. Naturally alkaline water also contains minerals that your body needs to function, such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium.
- Calcium: strengthens bones, supports a healthy circulatory system3
- Magnesium: converts food into energy, works to maintain muscles, nerves, heart, and kidney function3
- Potassium: maintains muscle relaxation and contraction, aids in digestion and fluid elimination3
- Sodium: controls blood pressure, balances fluids in the body, influences muscle movement3
Benefits of Alkaline Water
Research shows that alkaline waters may improve circulation by reducing the viscosity of your blood, allowing it to flow easily throughout your body. When your blood flows easily, oxygen and nutrients are delivered to your tissues. In a 2016 study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 100 healthy adults were given either regular water or alkaline water to rehydrate after a workout. Those who drank alkaline water had a 6.3 percent decrease in blood thickness, compared to a 3.36 decrease in those who had regular water4.
Can Reduce Acid-Reflux Symptoms
Acid reflux is a condition where acid moves back up through your esophagus, causing you to experience acid reflux symptoms such as belching, bloating, and nausea. The enzyme responsible for breaking down proteins, pepsin, plays a key role in acid reflux and can trigger symptoms. Interestingly enough, alkaline water can neutralizing pepsin to reduce symptoms.5
Staying hydrated is so important to our overall health and wellness! It not only ensures that our body temperature is regulated, but it also helps transport nutrients and aids in waste removal. Naturally alkaline water is a healthy way to hydrate. Because of its natural mineral content, it replenishes the electrolytes and minerals your cells need. Research shows that alkaline water is faster and more effective at hydrating than standard drinking waters.6
Regulates Blood Sugar
Believe it or not, sustaining blood sugar levels is a lot of work. Sometimes, it can take a toll on your bodies, causing increased thirst, headaches, and fatigue, or sometimes long-term consequences like impaired vision or nerve damage. Some preliminary research has shown that alkaline water may help balance blood sugar levels, making it easier for your body to sustain normal blood sugar levels and in turn promote better health.7
May Promote Bone Health
A highly acidic diet is known to increase bone loss by increasing the excretion of calcium through urine. However, an alkaline diet can prevent bone resorption, when bone tissue is broken down, and promote better bone health.9 Some preliminary studies have even shown that alkaline water may keep bones strong by influencing the hormones that affect bone metabolism. A study done by the Centre of Bone Diseases at Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland gave 30 women alkaline water and saw that it decreased levels of the parathyroid hormone, which causes bones to release calcium into the blood.
What About Weight Loss?
In a study done in 2001 conducted on a test group of mice that were given alkaline water for 52 weeks, researchers found that "animals in the study groups had lower body weights (up to 29% less) than controls despite equal food and water intake, suggesting a systemic response to the alkaline treatment." A second study conducted at Dongduk Women’s University’s Department of Obesity Management at the Graduate School of Obesity Science and published in Life Sciences also found that alkaline water had anti-diabetic effects, reporting that it reduced blood sugar and improved glucose tolerance in mice. While both of these studies offer only preliminary research, it's an exciting frontier with promising results for the connection between alkaline water and weight loss to be made.10
