The Importance of Practicing Self Care

Self-care is much more important than society gives credence to, often overlooked or simply categorized as "indulgent". In between life's demands, it's so important to remember to take time and take care of oneself -- you will reap the rewards of greater productivity, creativity, and balance. Here are some of our favorite ways to practice self-care.

Morning Ritual

Having a morning routine or ritual that feels good and feeds your soul will set the tone for the rest of your day. Whether it's 5 minutes or 1 hour, take time to indulge and treat yourself. Do what you love -- brew your favorite cup of coffee, read your favorite book, or listen to your favorite song. It'll help you be more focused and relaxed before you leave your house. For example, Kevin Kruse, author of 15 Secrets Successful People Know About Time Management, starts his morning with a 5-minute yoga stretch while doing these things3:

  1. Mentally reciting his personal mission statement
  2. Listing three things he's grateful for
  3. Reminding himself of his big three goal areas (Health, Wealth, and Love)

However, your morning ritual could simply be having a glass of lemon water, journaling (which we love), and going for a walk. All positive morning routines are good ones! Having a morning routine that works for you will help you focus on what you have planned for that day. You'll start off each day with the right attitude!

Epsom Salt Baths

An Epsom salt bath is an awesome way to unwind and destress, while benefiting from some of its healthy properties. They're known to help exfoliate and soften the skin, relax muscles, reduce inflammation, and even relieve cold and flu symptoms. It's said that stress causes a reduction in magnesium in the blood and in turn produces adrenalin, so the magnesium in Epsom salt absorbs into your skin and binds with serotonin, helping you to relax1. It also reduces inflammation, relieving muscle cramps, aches, and even arthritis pain; it also increases white blood cell count, helping you fight off a cold or flu. Lastly, it also flushes out toxins! Sign us up!

essential oils

Essential oils are great natural products to incorporate into your self-care routine. They come from organic compounds extracted from plants and are used for aromatherapy. Essential oils are so versatile; they can help alleviate cold and flu symptoms, improve digestion, and more! You can also easily integrate them into your self-care routine to help relieve muscle aches and soothe your body. Our top favorite essential oils are:

  1. Eucalyptus: helps invigorate and detox the body
  2. Lavender: improves mood and helps with relaxation
  3. Peppermint: boosts energy and improves focus

You can use essential oils topically, aromatically, and/or through ingestion2. However, there are a lot of different essential oils, so please consult a physician and do your research on the specific ways to use any oil you have your eye on!

almond oil massage

Getting massages are a no-brainer when it comes to relaxation, but there are benefits in particular from almond oil massages! Sweet almond oil, (not it's toxic counterpart, bitter almond oil), is cost effective, mild on the skin, and has healing properties. At roughly $10-$12 for 16 ounces, it's easy on the wallet but definitely feels luxurious 💆‍♀️. You can also mix it with more expensive oils, such as jojoba or rosehip, to make a custom oil blend. You can also mix in some essential oils! Its texture allows essential oils to absorb easily into the skin. Try adding 6-8 drops of lavender oil per ounce of almond oil3--you'll reach a new level of relaxation you didn't think was possible.

meditation

Lastly, we recommend starting your day with mindful meditation! There's lots of different way to approach meditation, so it's important to find what works for you. If you're new to meditation, you can start off by sitting for just 2 minutes every morning and ease into longer sessions. Or try HeadSpace, an affordable app that will show you how to build your meditation practice from the ground up, great for beginners.  Meditation reduces stress, improves concentration, and even benefits cardiovascular and immune health! Meditation also encourages a healthy lifestyle and slows aging... count us in! 🙋‍♂️

That's it! It's time to sit back and relax (and don't postpone it until next week!). When you feel good, you look good, and trust us, people will notice. Have any self-care routine tips? Comment below and share them with us!
